Marten and Oopjen; now on a wrap
Rembrandt van Rijn painted these two world famous portraits of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit in 1634 with oil paint on canvas. Now these masterpieces are featured back to back in a creative way on a soft lavender blue silk scarf.
About Marten and Oopjen
Marten Soolmans posed for Rembrandt van Rijn in 1643, to be forever immortalised. It was commonplace for wealthy people of that time to commission a portrait of themselves. However, a portrait by Rembrandt, the most sought-after painter of that time, was only reserved for the wealthiest. As an acquaintance of Rembrandt and the son of a wealthy Flemish immigrant, that owned a successful sugar factory in Amsterdam, Marten was lucky. Self-assured and dolled up as always, he posed. Oopjen already lived in Amsterdam. She came from a wealthy family of traders in grain and gunpowder, and her father wielded a lot of influence in Amsterdam. Oopje wore a less-decorated robe, but her black silk dress and jewellery show the quality and richness of that time. The original portraits of Marten and Oopjen are on display in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
